Samsung in Global Top 5

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has been recognized for the fourth consecutive time as a “Global Top 5” by Interbrand, an international brand consultancy that annually releases its “Best Global Brands” ranking. On this occasion it was also announced that the Samsung brand has reached a value of 91.4 billion dollars, equal to a growth of 4% year on year.
Samsung follows Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Google and is the first non-US brand, surpassing Toyota, Mercedes and Coca Cola.

EU looking to strengthen right to repair consumer goods instead of replacing them

The EU is seeking to adopt new measures to strengthen the right to repair goods instead of replacing them, in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of mass consumption.

Parliament adopted its position on a stronger “right to repair” for consumers earlier with 590 votes in favour, 15 against, and 15 abstentions.

The proposal aims to encourage more sustainable consumption by making it easier to repair defective goods, reducing waste and supporting the repair sector.

Suggested changes would require sellers to prioritise repairs should they be cheaper or equal in cost to replacing items.Consumers will have the right to request repairs for goods like washing machines, vacuum cleaners, smartphones and bicycles, even if the guarantee has expired.

MEPs also want producers to offer replacements “on loan” for the duration of the repair. If a product cannot be fixed, a refurbished one could be offered instead.

Hamilton Beach, has announced a change in its business strategy i. The plan involves a shift from selling identical products to those sold in the US in China. Instead, the company plans to develop customised products adapted to the Chinese market, produce them locally and sell them in the future. A spokesperson for Hamilton Beach’s Chinese marketing department said they will use a Chinese team and suppliers to develop new products to meet the needs of local customers. Household appliances must be awarded a CCC certificate so that the products can be exported to China or manufactured locally.Although Hamilton Beach’s sales figures in China still lag behind those in America, the company is optimistic about winning Chinese customers with its new strategy. The home appliance manufacturer sees China as an important market with great potential. “The US market is the present, while China will be the future,” said a company spokesperson.

AO profit

AO World swung to profit in its half-year results as it removed unprofitable sales and introduced charges on all deliveries.

The electricals retailer made a £13m pre-tax profit, compared to a £12m loss last year as it upgraded its profit guidance from £28m to between £28 to £33m for the year.

Adjusted EBITDA rose from £9m last year to £27m for the six months ended 30th September 2023.

Sales fell 12% to £482m as a result of it stripping out unprofitable sales, however it expects to return to revenue growth by the end of the year.

The retailer’s gross margin improved to 23.5% compared to 19.5% last year.
