Half a million Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines are being recalled over a potential fire hazard, manufacturer Whirlpool has said.

Half a million Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines are being recalled over a potential fire hazard, manufacturer Whirlpool has said.

As many as 519,000 of the machines sold in the UK between October 2014 and February 2018 may be affected by a fault with the door-locking system that could cause them to overheat and catch fire.

Owners who bought a Hotpoint or Indesit appliance during that window are urged to contact Whirlpool to find out if they are affected – and should unplug and stop using them immediately

Front load washing machines were designed for high-efficiency operation – they use the least water and energy, are gentler on clothes and have more capacity; however, 46 percent of consumers say that mold or odor is their top frustration when it comes to considering front load washers and many do not want to leave the door open to avoid the problem. In fact, one in two front load owners move back to top load washers because of smell and associated maintenance.

Haier Group’s Aqua launches laundry shops in Mainland China

Haier Group subsidiary Aqua Co is launching a chain of laundry shops in Mainland China to raise awareness of its washing machines and tap demand from double-income families for time-saving convenience.

The first Aqua Laundry Shop opened at Haier Cloud Park in the Laoshan district of Qingdao City, Shandong Province, China, earlier this month. Aqua now plans to create a “Japanese-style coin laundry market” in China.

According to its own data, Aqua holds the leading share of the Japanese coin-operated laundry market in unit volume. Now the Aqua Laundry Shop in Qingdao will set out to promote the “coin-laundry culture” in China, where coin-operated laundry facilities have not been widely used yet. The company will conduct market research, provide user experiences and share business models with prospective operators.

World’s first washing machine with microplastics filter

Turkish manufacturer Arcelik, the parent company of Beko and Grundig, has announced plans to launch the world’s first washing machine fitted with a built-in microplastics filter.

Arcelik CEO Hakan Bulgurlu announced the new washing machine in a keynote address at the IFA 2019 technology trade show in Berlin and said it would be rolled out to customers in 2020.

Bulgurlu called for closer industry partnerships and said the company was ready to share its new technology for the greater good. It’s claimed in some studies that more than one million fibres are flushed down the drain and end up in rivers and oceans after every single washing load. Although this number does depend heavily on the type of fibres used in textiles – along with the type of fabric construction.
