Recycle Your Electricals UK

More than 11 million toasters are thrown away in the UK every year, according to research commissioned by Recycle Your Electricals.

Consumers across the UK eat 40 million slices of toast a day and the average person eats 291 slices a year, but 11.4 million toasters are chucked away every year – and, of those people who dispose of them, almost half (46%) don’t know how or where to recycle them, or weren’t aware they could be recycled at all. Everything with a plug, battery or cable must be recycled – including toasters.

Ahead of International E-Waste Day (October 14), Material Focus, which is the organisation behind Recycle Your Electricals, has launched a new campaign called ‘Love Your Old Toaster. The scheme encourages people to recycle their electricals and raise awareness of the 5,000 recycling drop off points across the UK.

To promote the initiative, a recycling bank disguised as a giant toaster popped up at the Westfield Stratford City shopping centre in east London recently (September 30 to October 2). The toaster was covered in colourful illustrations of small household electricals, designed by muralist Eloisa Henderson-Figueroa.

TV presenter and consumer advocate, Michelle Ackerley, was the first person to pop her old electricals in for recycling. Actress Joanna Page also joined the campaign, to spread the word through radio interviews and on her Instagram.

In three days alone, more than 360 small household electricals for reuse and recycling were collected – from old and unwanted kettles, phones, cables, calculators, printers, electric toothbrushes and laptops.

The toaster was also on show at Westfield London last weekend (Shepherd’s Bush, October 7-9)

The current edition of Stiftung Warentest (StiWa) ‘test’ magazine (10/2022), the WCI 870 WPS and the WWE 360 WPS GreenPerformance washing machines by Miele achieved the top mark of Good (1.6) and putting in a compelling performance over a period of 10 years with their low running costs. In total, StiWa evaluated 14 frontloaders with load capacities between 8 and 9 kg.

«We are pleased about the most recent test win – says Michael Endt, category marketing Germany -and, in particular, at the top marks awarded for environmental properties. This proves that our efforts in developing sustainable and low-consumption products have paid off».

Alongside the criteria included in the evaluation, both models in the test convinced with their innovative PowerWash process with which even very small loads can be washed clean (A-rated wash efficiency) without compromising on energy efficiency. In combination with QuickPowerWash, this is even done in less than one hour. The test results for Miele’s WCI 870 WPS also apply to the technically identical models WWI 860 WPS and WEI 875 WPS

PREVENT MICROFIBRE POLLUTION ESCAPING IN TO OUR OCEAN

A business has raised almost £1m to develop a washing machine filter which could help tackle harmful levels of microplastic pollution in the world’s oceans.

The Cleaner Seas Group (CSG) said it had designed a self-generated device, which can be fitted or built into every type of washing machine, and can stop up to 700,000 microfibres being released into the environment with every wash cycleBude-based firm said an estimated 1.4 million trillion plastic microfibers have made their way into global seas, with research increasingly showing not only an impact on marine life but also on humans, as plastic infiltrates our food systems.

CSG said its latest investment, raised from a mix of business angels, institutional investors and high-net-worth individuals, had exceeded its initial target of £700,000.

Off the back of it, the company has now launched a crowdfunding campaign seeking to raise a further £460,000, while it has also announced a new senior hire as it moves to its next period of growth.

Whirlpool signs wind power purchase deal

Whirlpool ramps up its investments in renewable energy as the company signed Wednesday second wind virtual power purchase agreement in the off-site clean energy.
This latest agreement with ENGIE North America will represent 53 megawatts of clean, renewable wind energy over 12 years, which would mean removing about 30,633 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles from the roads each year.
“When this VPPA with ENGIE becomes fully operational in 2023, we expect to offset 100 percent of our U.S. plant electricity emissions,” noted management.
The move comes in line with company’s commitment to reach net zero emissions in its plants and operations by 2030.

Samsung has announced the release of its AI-powered washer and dryer, along with a host of other smart laundry solutions.
Samsung Electronics has announced the global release of its Bespoke AI Washer and Dryer. The products are “the most sustainable, efficient and intelligent Samsung washer and dryer to date”, according to the company. The products will expand Samsung’s signature Bespoke line-up, and are being launched in stores across Europe and the Middle East in August 2022.

The Bespoke AI Washer and Dryer pair can handle large load capacities while also having a sleek, space-saving design. Furthermore, the products boast a range of sustainable features, offering a dependable performance while saving users energy, resources and money. The new front-load laundry pair from Samsung has a new feature called AI Ecobubble. This innovation turns detergent into small bubbles which are swiftly absorbed into the laundry itself. In turn, this reduces energy usage by up to 70%, while apparently offering the same level of cleanliness to clothes, regardless of the wash temperature. In addition, the technology allegedly reduces soil or dirt removal by up to 24% while improving fabric care by 45.3%.

The AI Wash Cycle is another innovative feature which helps users get clean clothes in a more sustainable way. The smart feature washes clothes with less water and detergent after detecting the weight and softness of the fabrics in each load. The AI Wash Cycle can also actively monitor the ongoing dirt level of laundry, and uses its Auto Dispense feature to adjust the optimal amount of water and detergent to the wash.
