A new way to access the cooker oven

With the designer Wesley Mendez, Whirlpool redesigns the way the oven door opens on the company’s new freestanding range platform: not downward but to the side. What resulted is an optional side-swing door on a new 30-inch freestanding range. Mendez, who is based at Whirlpool Corporation’s Global Consumer Design Offices in Mexico, said the distinctive feature evolved after seeing data indicating a shift in consumer buying behavior in Latin American countries. In response to growing interest in using the oven on a freestanding range and meeting consumers’ changing needs, Mendez said he and his team created a new solution to make the oven cavity more inviting for consumers. “We thought it would be more approachable if we changed the way the door opens – Mendez explained -. Like a refrigerator, when you open the door, it’s a welcome for the consumer. You can get really close and you can have complete control of what happens in the rack”. The challenge of redesigning the oven door was then posed to Whirlpool Corporation’s Global Product Development team. “We had to translate a high-level concept to a manufacturable design”, said Ramiro Ruthes, Whirlpool Corporation System Integrator Leader for Freestanding Ranges. He led fellow engineers in the construction of a new door that is able to swing more than 100 degrees from the opening of the cavity. He explained the door also includes a step on the hinge to hold it clear of consumers while they’re accessing the oven. “One of the main requirements was to develop the side-swing door using the same product platform and most of the parts of the current drop-down door”, Ruthes said. Reengineering the oven door wasn’t the only focus for the Whirlpool teams behind the new freestanding range. They also improved the ergonomics and finishes of the handles and knobs. The burners are more efficient and the grates have been strengthened. Whirlpool introduced the side-swing feature to markets in Mexico in the third quarter 2019. Additional rollout is planned in Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia as well as markets in Central America and the Caribbean in the first quarter 2020.

Half a million Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines are being recalled over a potential fire hazard, manufacturer Whirlpool has said.

As many as 519,000 of the machines sold in the UK between October 2014 and February 2018 may be affected by a fault with the door-locking system that could cause them to overheat and catch fire.

Owners who bought a Hotpoint or Indesit appliance during that window are urged to contact Whirlpool to find out if they are affected – and should unplug and stop using them immediately

Cooking at Christmas is easier with Whirlpool

Thanks to its innovative technology and intuitive functions, Whirlpool appliances are the perfect allies in the kitchen because they offer professional results, effortlessly and in the shortest possible time.

The 6th Sense cooking combinations offer all the necessary assistance for any type of dish. In the ovens, the user only has to choose the type of food, the cooking point and the golden finish he wants.

In the case of induction plates, the sensors detect the temperature of the container and establish the ideal power level to melt, keep warm, simmer, boil, fry or grill.

The Ready2Cook function uses a powerful convection system that allows you to quickly reach the desired temperature without preheating the oven.

As for cleaning, pyrolytic ovens convert food scraps into ashes that can be easily cleaned with a damp sponge. On the other hand, the innovative Smartclean technology cleans the oven in just 35 minutes without leaving odors and without detergents.

The Cook3 and Cook4 functions allow you to cook up to four dishes at the same time without mixing flavors or aromas.

FlexiSide function plates offer cooking zones that can be used separately or connected vertically.

The W Collection range of appliances includes ovens and plates with connectivity. The recipes of the 6th Sense App can be sent to the appliance and, through its SmartDisplay, guide the user step by step in the preparation, indicating, on the screen, what to do at all times.

Whirlpool drops plan to shut plant in southern Italy

U.S.-listed white goods maker Whirlpool Corp has dropped plans to shut down a production site in the southern Italian city of Naples after two weeks of workers’ protests, the company said on Wednesday.

Whirlpool announced on Oct. 15 that it planned to shut down and sell the site, which it said was no longer profitable, prompting union protests and disappointing the Italian government after months of talks aimed at saving the plant.

Workers had reacted fiercely to the decision and metalworkers union FIOM-CGIL had called for work stoppages and protests at the group’s other plants in Italy.

On Wednesday, Whirlpool announced a change of course, saying it was “ready to withdraw the sale procedure … not to proceed with the layoffs in Naples and to continue the production of washing machines.”

In a video posted on Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), Industry Minister Stefano Patuanelli said the decision would open the way to finding a long term solution for the site.

“It is a first step towards restarting the talks with the aim of definitively resolving the site’s problems,” he said.

Whirlpool, which employs around 5,500 people in Italy had said the closure was necessary because the production of high-end washing machines in Naples was no longer profitable. The factory employs 400 workers in a region with some of the highest unemployment levels in the country.

In June, the Italian government threatened to scrap all incentives it had granted to the company to keep investing in Italy, estimated at some 50 million euros since 2014.

Whirlpool sells the Naples business complex

Whirlpool EMEA announced during the meeting at the Ministry of Economic Development, the decision to transfer the business complex of Naples to the company Passive Refrigeration Solutions SA (PRS) , active in the production and sale of passive refrigeration systems, which has developed a unique patent in the field of refrigerated containers.

According to the company, ” the transfer of the company branch is the only way to protect the maximum employment in Naples and offer a sustainable long-term future to the plant that, alternatively, would have ceased all production activity due to the
decline of demand for high-end washing machines at international level and the consequent drop in production which led the Naples plant to operate below 30% of its production capacity, thus determining a situation that is no longer sustainable for the company and for its own employees
