Electrolux Group puts the spotlight on resource efficiency with AEG EcoLine

Global appliance company Electrolux Group – under its premium brand AEG – is showcasing, for the first time, its most resource-efficient models at IFA 2023: the AEG EcoLine. AEG EcoLine is a dedicated selection, presented in-store and online, of the company’s most resource efficient appliances covering all major product categories and aimed at helping consumers to reduce climate impact while providing high-quality performance. The sustainable selection of appliances from the current AEG and Electrolux portfolio as well as the new AEG SaphirMatt induction hob with scratch-resistant glass will be revealed at IFA 2023

According to Electrolux Group’s science-based approach and Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), approximately 85% [1] of the global climate impact of an appliance, during its lifespan, is generated when it is in use. Therefore, to help reduce climate impact while providing high-quality performance, all models within AEG EcoLine have been designed to be used effortlessly, at their top efficiency, every day while meeting the brand’s strongest energy label ratings.

“Technological innovation is at the heart of every model within AEG EcoLine with functions designed to make life of consumers more enjoyable while making it easy to take more sustainable choices. Resource efficiency and performance without compromise is what consumers want and it’s what AEG EcoLine delivers,” says Chris Braam, CEO Europe Electrolux Group.

“We chose IFA 2023 to present the AEG EcoLine selection to an international audience because of its important role in highlighting innovation. AEG EcoLine is a significant step forward in making resource-efficient models stand out when people are looking for an appliance in-store or online, and we are very much looking forward to showcasing it to our trade partners and consumers in Berlin,” adds Braam.

AEG and kitchen trends in spotlight at Madrid design show

From April 13 to May 28, the latest interior design and lifestyle trends were on display at top design fair Casa Décor in Madrid, Spain and Electrolux Group’s premium brand AEG is there. This article shares the key trends that are expected to evolve the performance and enjoyment in the kitchen now and in the very near future.

Director Product Line Taste, Iberia, Alberto Dani took part in a panel discussion “Design, Functionality and Sustainability,” alongside Anna Ferrer, architect specializing in sustainability and founder of CU4 Studio, and Beatriz Tejada, Design and Creative Studio Director for Spanish furniture manufacturer dica. AEG is showcasing its latest kitchen appliances as part of dica’s design space.. When it comes to appliances, less is more
Appliances should be simultaneously beautifully understated, but clever in performance by offering multiple functions. At the event, sleek hobs with integrated fans were the norm, as were ovens that could toggle between steam, convection and microwave cooking. All help to reduce visual clutter, whilst the AEG matte black appliances are discreet with a premium finish so that when on display they present a sophisticated design statement.

Serious about sustainability: from eco settings to compact spaces

The showcase included no end of sustainable thinking with many design features using recycled material – from PET on ceiling lights to the inner liners of the AEG fridge made from 70% recycled plastic. Trends from the panel discussion also focused on quality, longer lasting materials, as well as personalization when designing spaces. Kitchens and homes can support people far better when done to fit around people’s lifestyles and their sustainable wishes and more of this is being requested. Appliances also offered eco settings that ensure energy use is minimized without sacrificing performance.Technology and smart design strengthen emotional connection
”Many of the new experiences on offer in the kitchen could pass you by and your life would be just fine,” says Dani. “But as it should be with smart design and technology working together, once a feature or product offer has been experienced, it is very difficult to settle for less and this helps strengthen the emotional connection to kitchen and user.

Such experiences include the AEG ComfortLift dishwasher that lifts the lower basket of the appliance up for easy loading and unloading, the vacuum sealer that helps keep food for longer and provides new ways to cook, as well as the steam function within multipurpose ovens.

People are willing to spend more

“We also see that as people demand more, so they are willing to spend more,” adds Dani.  “In Spain, the average price of home appliances has increased by 16% versus pre-pandemic. Part of this is due to inflation, but equally it shows that people invest in their home, especially when you consider that prices of home appliances have been historically quite stable,” he explains.

Four series, distinguished by their main characteristics. Finally, for maximum customization, it is possible to save up to three favorite programs directly on the control panel, so as to always have them at hand.

World’s first fridge with 70% recycled plastic inner liners

The recycled plastic content and advanced food preservation features of our new built-in refrigerators have been well received by consumers. Simona Oboroceanu, Category Marketing Manager from the Food Preservation team at Electrolux tells us why.

Hi Simona! Tell us more about our breakthrough in incorporating recycled plastic in our refrigerators.

The Electrolux Group has developed a new line of built-in refrigerators – the Electrolux 500-900 Series and AEG 5000-9000 Series – that we’re currently launching in Europe. The recent launches have inner liners made from 70% recycled plastic, which equates to 13% of the total plastic used in the refrigerator. We are the first in the world to incorporate this much recycled plastic into a refrigerator so it’s an important industry breakthrough.

The plastic is sourced from a specialty supplier that collects and refines plastic from discarded refrigerators in Europe. It is very important that we work with strong and reliable partners that can provide access to high-quality recycled materials.

The range has been well received at fairs such as IFA in Berlin as the industry sees the product as being concrete proof that we take sustainability seriously.

How have consumers responded to the inner liners made from recycled plastic?

Consumers have responded very positively to the inner liners, and they perceive the gray shade of plastic as being more premium than standard white liners. They favor products made from recycled materials and our research has shown they want this kind of refrigerator with recycled materials.

How do our built-in fridges help retain nutrients and avoid food waste?

The recent launches have an innovative GreenZone crisper drawer to keep fruit and vegetables fresh. They are offered in two versions – one with a manual vent that consumers can open or close depending on how full the drawer is and an automatic version. The automatic crisper has a membrane that allows ingredients to breathe by regulating and optimizing humidity.

Third-party studies have shown that our GreenZone crisper drawer can retain 95% of the vitamin C in blueberries after 11 days. None of our competitors use this kind of innovative membrane so it is a clear competitive advantage for us.

The recent launches also use innovative cooling technology that keeps the temperature stable to help ingredients last longer. One of the solutions is Cooling 360, which maintains a more stable temperature distribution, to preserve food for longer by avoiding temperature shocks and stress on food. Our TwinTech® No Frost also keeps food hydrated with independent cooling systems for the fridge and the freezer parts.

What do customers think about these enhanced abilities to help preserve ingredients?

Consumers immediately understand the value to them – not only in terms of retaining the vitamins in their ingredients for their health, but also making ingredients last longer and ultimately helping them to avoid food waste. Importantly, consumers really value the third-party verified fact-based claims we make. At Electrolux Group we’re committed to help consumers live better, more sustainable lives in the home and this refrigerator line reflects that.

Consumers have shown increased interest in healthy eating, particularly since the pandemic, and we go beyond the standard refrigerator offering by helping them to maintain the vitamin content and quality of the food they eat. Also, people are becoming increasingly conscious of food waste and the materials that are used to manufacture their products.

Will they be launched in other markets in 2023?

Yes, as well as continuing to roll out these innovations across Europe in 2023, we are looking at launching in other regions, such as Asia Pacific, in the coming years. Watch this space!
