Grenfell Tower fire
The company behind the Hotpoint fridge-freezer linked to the devastating Grenfell Tower fire is facing legal action for allegedly failing to test the model’s materials against fire safety standards.
As reported by the *Financial Times*, Beko Europe—formerly known as Whirlpool—is among several businesses named in a High Court lawsuit exceeding £358 million. Investigations previously identified the Hotpoint FF175BP fridge-freezer as the likely initial source of the fire in June 2017, which tragically claimed over 70 lives.
Lawyers representing the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, as detailed in *The Guardian*, argue that Beko Europe neglected to test critical materials such as the plastic backing, foam, and polystyrene used in the fridge-freezer. They contend that such materials would have failed compliance under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 1994 if properly tested.
In response, the company disputes these allegations and asserts it is “vigorously defending” the claims.
Meanwhile, Arçelik, the Turkish parent company of the Beko brand, completed a merger last year with U.S.-based Whirlpool, forming Beko Europe.
The issue of fire safety in household appliances has been a longstanding concern. A 2013 report by the London Fire Brigade highlighted fridges and freezers as among the “most dangerous household appliances during a fire,” citing the high amounts of plastic and flammable insulation as contributing to approximately 300 fridge-related fires annually across Great Britain.
Beko close UK factory
Beko Europe told staff last month that its Hotpoint UK factory in Yate, near Bristol, will close on December 31.
The decision means the end of more than a century of manufacturing at the site on Station Road.
A spokesperson from Beko Europe said all affected staff have been notified and that they are “grateful for their continued efforts”.
Beko Egypt White goods plant built at a total investment of $110m
Beko has placed industrial localisation at the forefront of its strategy with its first manufacturing plant in the 10th of Ramadan industrial city.
The facility, covering 114,000 square metres, will heavily rely on local suppliers, with the local content expected to reach 50-60 percent, said Umit Günel, General Manager of Beko Egypt.
“Beko Egypt’s local manufacturing drive aims to make Egypt a central hub for exporting home appliances to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, with 60 percent of production allocated for export,” he told Zawya Projects, adding that the plant is projected to generate $250 million annually in export revenues.
The plant was officially inaugurated last week.
He emphasised the company’s commitment to boosting cooperation with local manufacturers of plastics, cables, and metals to deepen localisation, adding that within the first six months of operations, Beko Egypt increased its production capacity from 1 million to 1.5 million units of ovens and refrigerators annually and expanded its supplier network.
The plant, built with an investment exceeding $110 million, will focus on producing eco-friendly home appliances designed to save water and energy in line with Egypt’s green economy goals. It is also expected to provide over 2,000 jobs for Egyptian youth, bolstering the national economy.
Günel said the facility will run on renewable energy, supporting Beko’s ‘Zero Waste’ policy. Any production waste will be recycled, with metals and other components re-evaluated for quality.
“Beko’s dishwashers, for example, will incorporate plastic parts made from recycled materials, reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainability,” he said.
The Beko Egypt official noted that, despite tough market competition, the company is ready to expand further, continuously assessing new possibilities to introduce additional products. The dishwashing segment has received fast-track approval from Egyptian authorities.
Beko, which ranks as the second-largest household appliance brands in the region and among the top ten worldwide, currently produces 65 million units annually across the globe. The company’s global operations span 58 countries with 46 production facilities in 14 countries

Beko split and cook technology
The run-up to this year’s IFA, Beko has already
announced an exciting innovation in the field of
cooking and baking, with the launch of its new built-in
oven featuring Split&Cook technology: The oven’s
cooking space delete in can be divided, allowing
simultaneous baking, stewing or grilling – all without
cross contamination of flavours, the company says.
In the divisible cooking chamber of the Split&Cook built-in oven BBVM13400XDS, from the
bPRO 500 series, two different dishes can be prepared at a temperature difference of up to
80°C, Beko says. Users can bake sourdough bread at 250 °C and at the same time cook
lasagne at 170°C, or gratinate a hearty vegetable casserole and prepare the sweet apple
crumble for afternoon coffee at the same time – and the flavours stay where they belong.
Meanwhile, if only a couple of rolls or croissants need warming on a Sunday morning, the
half of the oven that is not required can remain significantly cooler – thus saving up to 18%
energy. The oven has an energy efficiency rating of A+.
Turn one into two with a flick of the wrist
According to the manufacturer, the 72-litre cooking space can be divided into an upper and a lower segment in just a flick of the wrist, if it is not being used to its full height, thanks to a
heat-insulating plate.
Both compartments have their own fans with AeroPerfect technology, which are said to
optimally distribute hot air and thus ensure, for example, evenly golden brown biscuits
without burnt corners.
In terms of practical features, the Split&Cook has telescopic rails in both halves of the oven to make it easy to put food in and take it out.
The light comes on automatically when the oven door is opened, and the door closes gently with SoftClose. The side rails, featuring five shelf levels can be detached for easier cleaning
Precise control on both levels
Finally, the new oven can be operated via the LCD display and the rotary knobs almost like
two independent ovens: two controllers allow the temperature to be set to an accuracy of five degrees each, taking into account the maximum temperature difference, separate timers for both sub-rooms are integrated. The oven has a total of 14 types of heating – in addition to top/bottom heat and convection, these include programs such as defrosting, grilling, pizza
and keeping warm.
