Samsung Reshuffle

Samsung said on Tuesday it will merge its mobile and consumer electronics divisions and named new co-CEOs in its biggest reshuffle since 2017, to simplify its structure and focus on growing its logic chip business. The sweeping move is the latest sign of centralised change at the world’s largest memory chip and smartphone maker, after Vice Chairman Jay Y Lee was paroled in August from a bribery conviction.

The head of visual display business, Han Jong-hee, was promoted to vice chairman and co-CEO, and will lead the newly merged division spanning mobile and consumer electronics as well as continuing to lead the TV business. Han has risen through the ranks in Samsung’s visual display business, without experience in mobile. Analysts said it was unclear what kind of changes or divisions of labour are expected under Han.

Dyson’s split with major supplier

Dyson is reportedly cutting ties with ATA IMS, one of Malaysia’s top providers of electronics manufacturing services, which supplies the UK firm with spare parts for vacuum cleaners and air purifiers, over labor-abuse allegations.

The step came after several current and former employees along with an ATA former executive alleged that the company used to hire mostly migrants who were forced to work up to 15 hours a day and to skip rest days to keep up with demand. Moreover, ATA reportedly coached its staff to hide real working and living conditions from Dyson and labour inspectors.

NEFF manufacturing record

45 million home appliances produced: BSH Neff GmbH site in Bretten celebrated a manufacturing anniversary in the fall of 2021 – two milestones have been reached at once:

“15 million ovens and 30 million extractor hoods made in Bretten, these are proud figures,” notes Thomas Baumeister, the site manager. “A big thank you to the colleagues who are the basis of this success. They contribute with the greatest commitment, with passion, inventiveness, and the highest quality standards every day to continue writing this success story. And they do so even in times that are anything but easy and present us with major challenges.”

Can air cleaners reduce COVID-19 in schools?

Philips Domestic Appliances is proud that our 3000i Air Purifier technology is selected to be part of an important study with the University of Leeds on reducing the transmission of Covid in schools.

This study investigates the feasibility of using air cleaners to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in 30 primary schools in Bradford. The ÂŁ1.9 million investigation is being funded by the Department for Health and Social Care and led by Professor Mark Mon-Williams from the University of Leeds.

Philips Air Purifiers use HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) technology filters to trap unwanted particles such as dust, pollen, bacteria and airborne viruses from the air while allowing clean air to be pushed back out into the environment.

It is vital that we all work together to understand how to make spaces like schools as safe as possible for children, teachers and the wider community. It is a privilege to work with such dedicated teams of professors and researchers on such a meaningful project.

Leveraging AI for a “smarter shaving experience

Consumer electronics giant Philips has launched the Philips Norelco Shaver Series 9000, a “revolutionary” shaver which pairs AI and the connected Philips GroomTribe app to deliver “the ultimate smart shaving experience”.

According to the brand, the Philips Norelco Shaver Series 9000 delivers superior closeness and personalised skin comfort, (when compared with Philips Norelco 9000 predecessor), even on five-day beards.

Features include a Pressure Guard sensor, which links with an intelligent light ring, illuminating in different colours to indicate whether and when the right amount of pressure is applied. Motion Control sensors in the Philips Norelco Shaver Series 9000, meanwhile, track and guide shaving motions for a more efficient shaving technique.

When used with the Philips GroomTribe app, the shaver provides real-time feedback to users on their shaving patterns including pressure, speed and motion, as well as personalised shaving plans and tips, Philips says. And, for improved shaving performance, the Power Adapt sensor reads hair density 500 times per second and auto-adapts cutting power for an effortless shave.

Inverter microwave

Inverter microwaves are a fairly recent innovation, and to understand what makes them so appealing, you first have to understand how a conventional microwave operates. If you cook something at 50% power in a standard microwave, the appliance actually cycles on and off, intermittently cooking at 100% power for a few seconds then 0% power. This is why the edges of items often end up cooked much more than the center and why defrosting takes so long.

Inverter microwaves, on the other hand, can operate at 50% power (or another reduced level) throughout the whole cooking process, which results in faster and more even cooking. This technology is ideal for those who regularly use their microwave for defrosting, but it does tend to drive up the price of the appliance.

What to Consider

When shopping for a microwave, you’ll first want to check that “inverter technology” is listed as one of its features, as it’s still a fairly new concept. From here, you’ll want to consider factors such as the size of the microwave, as well as its power, which is measured in watts. Microwaves with higher wattage tend to cook food faster and more evenly.
