The healthy refrigerator Bosch raises the standard for new refrigerators – upwards and outwards. One of the producer’s visions is to reduce food waste. Bosch took us into the laboratory and the dreams of the white goods of the future. The German manufacturer Bosch raises the standard for refrigerators. An XL refrigerator must in future be 194 centimeters high and 77 centimeters wide. It creates, depending on the consumer’s choice of model, between 21 and 45% more “useful content” in the fridge. Bosch states that more than 50% of consumers today declare themselves “very interested in healthy nutrition and healthy foods”. Bosch has translated this statement into a “healthy refrigerator”, where bio-based plastics and simpler, lighter components are already used in the production phase, saving 33% of materials already in production.
In addition, the XL fridge is a weapon in the fight against food waste: a less crowded fridge automatically means more order, more overview and less food waste.
Bosch presented figures showing that 22% of consumers today already have connected, “smart” appliances. Bosch sees connectivity and artificial intelligence as the very key to sustainability:
“Take auto-dispensing detergent as an example. Auto-dos saves 38% of detergent compared to when people dose themselves. Add to that that a mini-wash saves approx. 50% water compared to a normal wash. It is precisely the smart products and the human consideration that can lead us to the sustainable use of white goods”, said de.t
34% of German consumers emphasize that white goods are smart when making new purchases. More than 40% are willing to pay more for smart devices.
Bosch develops most of its new products in Germany, which is naturally emphasized in an IFA context, where the large audience is German. But the manufacturer also had concrete news from the local development laboratories: from 2024 all Bosch washing machines are in energy class A.
Not only Bosch delivers here. I wonder if we are moving towards a new rescaling of the pan-European energy labels

This level of automation means users can spend less time doing the laundry and more time doing the things they love.
LG’s innovative, new appliance employs the company’s own inverter heat pump drying module to significantly reduce drying times and maximize energy efficiency. And thanks to 6 Motion™ AI Direct Drive technology, the washer-dryer also intelligently optimizes drying performance and minimizes fabric damage for each and every load.
The company’s new combination washer and dryer further enhances ease of use with a range of thoughtfully applied smart features. The appliance’s smart touch door and voice recognition capabilities, for example, allow users to turn on the machine and open its door with practically no effort at all. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced the launch of the new Less Microfiber™ Filter, an external washing machine filter designed to significantly reduce plastic microfiber emissions during laundry cycles. Designed with inspiration from apparel maker Patagonia and expertise from the global ocean conservation organisation Ocean Wise, the filter builds on the success of last year’s Less Microfiber™ Cycle to substantially cut microplastics and enable sustainable laundry washing that is both effective and effortless. The new filter is now available in Korea and the U.K., and will roll out to other countries in the third quarter.
“With microplastics emissions to our oceans continuing to increase and regulations being strengthened in many countries, as well as microplastics becoming a growing health concern for people everywhere, Samsung worked with Ocean Wise and Patagonia to engineer technology to help prevent the release of microplastics from our daily life,” said Moohyung Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D Team of Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “With innovations like the Less Microfiber™ Filter and Cycle, Samsung is helping to enable Everyday Sustainability in a wider array of products and making eco-conscious daily practices second nature in the home.”Samsung’s proprietary Ecobubble™ technology. By using bubbles to help dissolve and absorb detergent, less heat and energy is required to wash clothes, resulting in reduced abrasion.
The Less Microfiber™ Filter takes this a step further, preventing up to 98%[2] of microplastics released during laundry from escaping into the ocean if used as specified, equivalent to eight 500ml plastic bottles per year[3] when used four times a week. In addition, to help more customers get involved in cutting microplastic emissions, the Less Microfiber™ Filter has a mountable design style that allows it to be used with standard washing machine models, demonstrating the company’s dedication to long-term sustainability and helping customers move towards embrace sustainability at home. To verify the technology’s efficacy and its features, both Cycle and the Filter were independently evaluated by Ocean Wise using a peer-reviewed microfiber shedding test protocol at the marine organisation’s state-of-the-art lab in Vancouver, Canada.
