The CEO of Arcelik, one of the world’s biggest home appliance makers, told Xinhua recently that China is a bright spot for business amid global recession fears and an increasingly gloomy market outlook.
Speaking of the present headwinds against the world economy, Hakan Bulgurlu said, “we will have to go through a lot of pain before it gets better.”
China, however, is “a little bit of a different picture,” he said in a video interview with Xinhua.
Established in 1955, Arcelik is a Turkish multinational household appliances manufacturer headquartered in Istanbul. With 45,000 employees, its global operations include subsidiaries in 53 countries, 30 production facilities in nine countries.
Arcelik’s domestic sales in China have grown by roughly 80 percent in 2022.
“I find China one of the more promising places to be in the future. It has always been the factory of the world, and I think it will continue to be the factory of the world,” said Bulgurlu.
“The world economy has significantly slowed down, and we are facing a recession on many fronts,” said the Turkish businessman, who had lived in Hong Kong for 13 years.
Calling himself “a big fan” of China and Asia, Bulgurlu said he is optimistic about the business performance in the future Chinese market. “I think demand for appliances continues. We want to continue investing in China to actually bring our brands in.”According to Bulgurlu, four product groups, namely heating and cooling, refrigeration, lighting and electric motors, consume about 40 percent of all power. Many current technologies have made these production much more efficient.
“We need global regulations to make us use the best available technologies in all of these product groups to reduce power consumption,” he said.
Regarding the upcoming COP27 meeting, he said “I hope to make some progress and talk not only with policymakers but other CEOs as well.”
“I actually admire China in the sense that when China makes a decision, it follows through very, very fast,” Bulgurlu said.

Haier and Gree decent profits
Gree Electric Appliances and Haier Smart Home, two leading Chinese white goods makers, both logged decent profit in the first three quarters despite a slump in the overall market.
Gree reported a 17 percent jump in net profit in the first nine months from the same period a year ago to CNY18.3 billion (USD2.5 billion), while revenue advanced 6.8 percent to CNY147.5 billion (USD20.3 billion), according to the Zhuhai, southern Guangdong province-based company’s latest financial report released yesterday.
Haier posted a 17.3 percent gain in net profit over the period to CNY11.7 billion (USD1.6 billion) while revenue surged 8.9 percent to CNY184.7 billion (USD25.3 billion), the Qingdao, eastern Shandong province-based company said the same day.
This is despite China’s home appliance market slumping 6.1 percent in the nine months ended Sept. 30 year on year to CNY510.3 billion (USD70.4 billion), according to Beijing-based market research agency All View Cloud. The sales of major home appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners and washing machines have tumbled while that of emerging products such as cleaning robots and dishwashers have picked up.
Haier was able to increase its share of the global market in the first three quarters by improving its overseas market layout through more new high-end brands, it said. The company’s continuous digitization has improved the user experience and operational efficiency, enabling steady growth despite a tricky external environment.
Gree’s profit growth was boosted by the acquisition of a 30 percent stake in Zhejiang DunAn Artificial Environment, a core component supplier for air conditioners, earlier this year. Dun’An’s net profit doubled in the first three quarters year on year to CNY702 million (USD96.6 million).
But other major home appliance manufacturers are seeing growth stall. Midea Group’s net profit climbed 4.3 percent over the same period to CNY24.5 billion (USD3.3 billion) while revenue gained 3.4 percent to CNY271.8 billion (USD37.3 billion), the Foshan, Guangdong province-headquartered company said on Oct. 28.

OPSS intervenes on dangerous Glen Dimplex gas cookers
Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has intervened to ensure that more than 66,000 dangerous Belling, New World and Stoves gas cookers which pose a carbon monoxide poisoning risk will be made safe through a modification programme.
Parent company Glen Dimplex Home Appliances (GDHA) has agreed to visit every home containing the affected cookers, to implement a technical modification to the appliance so that operation of the gas grill is safe. The company is required to contact all affected users. Information about the models and consumer advice are available on the company’s websites:
OPSS analysed product safety data which revealed certain models of Glen Dimplex gas cookers with a separate gas grill have an inherent carbon monoxide risk putting consumers in danger. Affected cookers do not comply with the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 and the Gas Appliances (Enforcement) and Miscellaneous Amendments Regulations 2018.
Until their cookers are made safe, GDHA and OPSS are advising those using the affected models to ensure they always leave the grill door open when in operation.
Office for Product Safety and Standards Chief Executive Graham Russell said:
“The government’s top priority is to ensure the safety of the British public. Glen Dimplex has agreed to undertake this modification programme following our investigation. OPSS will monitor the programme to ensure it is carried out successfully. Until their products are made safe, we would urge users to ensure the door is always kept open when the grill is in operation.”
