Washing with less energy

Did you know? Doing the laundry today uses significantly less energy than it did twenty years ago.

The average energy use per cycle for washing machines has dropped to 0.6 kWh, driven by ongoing advancements in home appliance technology. This shift reflects the industry’s long-term focus on improving energy performance while responding to the expectations of consumers and broader sustainability objectives.

AO profit surge

AO World has hailed a record performance after its profits surged nearly 30% driven by cost-saving initiatives and strong growth of its membership scheme.

Adjusted pre-tax profits for the electricals specialist rose 27% to £44m for the year to 31 March, coming in at the top end of its £39m to £44m guidance.

This was driven by a 9% increase in group sales to £1.13bn and several cost-saving efficiencies, including the introduction of a new third-party warehousing solution in its distribution centre.

AO benefited from returning customers, which accounted for over 60% of orders during the year. It expects this trend to improve over time.

APPLiA, together with other industry associations

APPLiA, together with other industry associations, is calling for immediate and effective action to tackle the unchecked flow of unsafe, non-compliant products entering the EU via online marketplaces.

Every day, 12 million parcels are imported into the EU without proper controls. A proposed €2 handling fee on goods from non-EU sellers, while a small step in the right direction, will not address the scale of the issue nor ensure a level playing field for companies committed to compliance.
To effectively address the issue, : APPLiA recommend

✅ Recognise online marketplaces as economic operators when there is no EU based traders
✅ Enforce measures that apply beyond the border, with clear liability and sanctions
✅ Close legal loopholes currently exploited by non-compliant sellers
✅ Ensure strong due diligence requirements before products are listed online
APPLiA call on the European Commission, the European Parliament, and Member States to take the necessary measures to protect EU consumers and ensure fair conditions for compliant businesses.
