Dyson Wash G1: A New Spin on the Vacuum-Mop

Although lacking a traditional suction mechanism, the Wash G1 effectively collects dirt and cleans floors.
Dyson, renowned for its distinctive design language, has entered the competitive stick vacuum-mop market with the Wash G1. This move by the British manufacturer directly addresses the surging popularity of these hybrid devices, a trend largely driven by numerous Chinese brands.
Dyson boldly asserts that the Wash G1 sets a new hygiene standard in this category, a claim underpinned by its unique, suction-free operation. This begs the question: can a device that doesn’t suck still be accurately termed a vacuum?
Conventional stick vacuum-mops typically employ a system where clean water is dispensed onto the floor via a brush, and simultaneously, the dirty water, laden with grime, is suctioned back into a separate tank. This dirty water tank usually incorporates a filter to capture dust, debris, and hair.
In contrast, the Wash G1 features a 1-liter clean water tank and an 800-ml dirty water tank. Instead of suction, the Wash G1 employs a different mechanism for debris collection. Two small nylon bristle brushes, positioned between two larger, counter-rotating microfiber washing rollers, agitate and direct the debris towards a filter located at the base of the unit.
This innovative, suction-free approach eliminates the need for air filtration and expulsion, inherently reducing the potential for unpleasant odors and internal blockages. Consequently, the Wash G1 promises a simpler maintenance routine.
Furthermore, unlike the suction-based water removal in other models, the Wash G1 utilizes a low-flow pump to transfer dirty water to its designated tank. To date, this “absorbing” rather than “sucking” method appears to be exclusive to Dyson within this product class.
The Wash G1 prioritizes user-friendliness with a small control screen integrated into the handle. This interface allows users to easily adjust the moisture level according to the specific cleaning needs of the area. A clear battery life indicator keeps users informed of the remaining cleaning time. Dyson estimates a 35-minute runtime, sufficient to clean an area of approximately 290 square meters.
Weighing in at 4.8 kg when empty, the Wash G1 is on the heavier side but maintains impressive maneuverability. Its cleaning performance is noteworthy, leaving floors damp rather than saturated, facilitating rapid drying.
Complementing the Wash G1, Dyson offers its own cleaning solution, the Dyson 02 probiotic. This solution utilizes live microorganisms to actively break down dirt and neutralize odors.
Emptying and rinsing the dirty water tank is a straightforward process. Collected debris is simply discarded into the trash, while the rollers benefit from a “autoclean” function activated once the unit is placed back on its charging base.
