Cooking with Gas Stoves: A Hidden Air Quality Hazard

Cooking with gas-burning stoves may fill your kitchen with more toxic air than you’ll find on Marylebone Road, one of central London’s busiest and most polluted streets, according to experts at *Which?*.

Gas stoves emit two major air pollutants: nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and PM2.5 particles. NO2 is a harmful gas linked to respiratory problems, while PM2.5 refers to microscopic particles—each just 2.5 micrometers or smaller—that can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream.

These findings highlight the hidden risks associated with gas stoves, emphasizing the importance of better ventilation and considering alternative, healthier cooking technologies.

Stoves zoneless induction

The debut of Stoves’ new and improved Deluxe range cooker, which uses zoneless induction technology, has been announced. The new appliance line, which Stoves calls “a world first,” makes use of a zoneless induction hotplate, which frees users from set cooking rings and allows them to put saucepans anywhere on the surface.

By enabling the use of pots and pans of any shape or size alongside one another, Stoves’ revolutionary FreedomFLEXTM zoneless induction hotplates are expected to expand the options available to home chefs.

The new range cookers also have TrueTemp digital thermostats, which prevent temperature changes in the oven, pre-programmed settings for tasks like simmering or melting chocolate, and a management system.rom 900mm to 1100mm widths, the collection is launching in three distinct styles: the Richmond Deluxe, Sterling Deluxe, and Precision Deluxe.

OPSS intervenes on dangerous Glen Dimplex gas cookers

Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has intervened to ensure that more than 66,000 dangerous Belling, New World and Stoves gas cookers which pose a carbon monoxide poisoning risk will be made safe through a modification programme.

Parent company Glen Dimplex Home Appliances (GDHA) has agreed to visit every home containing the affected cookers, to implement a technical modification to the appliance so that operation of the gas grill is safe. The company is required to contact all affected users. Information about the models and consumer advice are available on the company’s websites:

OPSS analysed product safety data which revealed certain models of Glen Dimplex gas cookers with a separate gas grill have an inherent carbon monoxide risk putting consumers in danger. Affected cookers do not comply with the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 and the Gas Appliances (Enforcement) and Miscellaneous Amendments Regulations 2018.

Until their cookers are made safe, GDHA and OPSS are advising those using the affected models to ensure they always leave the grill door open when in operation.

Office for Product Safety and Standards Chief Executive Graham Russell said:

“The government’s top priority is to ensure the safety of the British public. Glen Dimplex has agreed to undertake this modification programme following our investigation. OPSS will monitor the programme to ensure it is carried out successfully. Until their products are made safe, we would urge users to ensure the door is always kept open when the grill is in operation.”

OPSS Issues Grill Safety Warning

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued a safety warning relating to the use of gas grills on certain Belling, Stoves and New World gas range cookers manufactured by Glen Dimplex Home Appliances (GDHA).

If the gas grill is used with the door closed, there is a risk that dangerous levels of carbon monoxide can build up, posing a significant risk of serious injury or death to those within the immediate environment.

For further information, consumers should contact GDHA on 0800 110 5728 or via their website:
