Whirlpool

Whirlpool, the global number one home appliance marketer, presented their entire brand portfolio, for the first time, at the leading international fair, IFA in Berlin at the beginning of September.

With a stand of 3,200 m², visitors, including the media and trade partners, experienced the vast offering and very distinctive complementary brands; KitchenAid, Bauknecht, Whirlpool, Hotpoint and Indesit.

Whirlpool is lauded for its breakthrough innovation and resource-efficient appliances. Exhibited for the first time was the range of intuitive and easy to use appliances driven by the company’s exclusive 6th Sense LIVE technology. IFA presented the stage to spotlight a range of Whirlpool freestanding appliances that can communicate and interact with you and each other, controlled via an app developed for use with both iOS and Android devices. The range includes the Supreme NoFrost fridge freezer for optimum frost free climate for food preservation, reducing energy and food waste. It highlights new features and provides peace of mind while you are away from home, so you can control and monitor wherever you are. The Supreme Care washing machine and tumble dryer will revolutionise the way you do the laundry, allowing you to interact with your washer and dryer, where the washing machine will synchronise with the tumble dryer to set up the perfect programme for impeccable garment care.

The audience was wowed by the SmartCook induction hob, the first of its type on the market. It uses special sensors to monitor and control the temperature of the food accurately and at the same time offers a unique programme that guides you through food preparation and the flexible zones. Select up to four settings for each area (melting, boiling, simmer and warming) and the hob will automatically set and adjust the temperature accordingly.

It was the European debut of the Interactive Kitchen of the Future 2.0, a concept cooking environment and fully connected social media hub that syncs all your devices with your kitchen appliances, so that everything and everyone you communicate with is within easy reach via existing services.  The interactive splashback and hob connects to your social networks and favourite websites for recipes, for perfect entertainment planning, without the need for your ‘phone, iPad or books.  The interactive splashback with personalised touchscreen will enable live conversations with friends and family for hints and tips, while the oven switches on at the right time for dinner and the fridge sends an alert when food is at its freshest. It absorbs information from all other appliances predicting and adjusting needs according to task.  It will track your guests via GPS and alert you if they are going to be delayed, while suggesting the best wine to drink with your menu. The future is nearly here.

Pretty impressive, right? There’s no confirmed UK release date yet, but we’ll definitely keep you posted!

TCL

TCL Corp, the leading Chinese home appliances maker, will start selling washing machines and refrigerators in the Middle East and Europe in a new push to boost its international presence.

“We produce middle-and high-end white goods and appliances, and are now taking intensive steps to prepare for their imminent release in the regions,” said Chen Weidong, its vice-president, on Tuesday.

TCL is best known as a major television manufacturer, but is expanding into the white goods sector to boost profit margins.

“Our plan is to become a top-five Chinese white-goods appliance brand by next year, and looking to overseas markets will be an important step in achieving that goal,” Chen said, without disclosing any specific sales target.

The Guangdong-based company has spent 7 billion yuan ($1.1 billion) since 2013 for its first fridge and washing machine manufacturing base.

Its production lines started last year, and are now churning out 18,200 units daily.

Chen Busheng, a freelance analyst who has been following the home appliances sector for years, said: “Though TCL is a latecomer, its existing overseas resources such as the international talent it employs and its widespread sales channels can help deliver a good performance.”

The electronics firm recorded revenue of 101 billion yuan last year, 46.6 percent of which came from overseas businesses.

As of last year, it employed 75,000 people in over 80 countries and regions, according to its official website.

Ceced

The Home Appliance industry is concerned by the European Commission’s decision to propose a new Energy Label Framework Regulation. «The proposed Regulation – Paolo Falcioni, director general of Ceced has explained – will postpone the urgent need to rescale where it is highly needed, such as for washing machines where top classes are overpopulated, and embarks the EU institutions on a lengthy debate. The current framework legislation already has all the flexibility to allow for rescaling, where needed, which would create better transparency for consumers. Right now.» For product categories with an urgent need for rescaling, Ceced would support the swift adoption of product measures having room at the top of the scale to ensure a stable scenario for facilitating innovation and keeping the market competitive that, according to the Committee of domestic equipment manufacturers, is also possible within the current Framework. Furthermore, Ceced underlines, proposed changes such as replacing labels of appliances that have been already put on the market, would lead to unacceptable retroactive labelling requirements. On the other hand, Ceced supports the focus on consumer empowerment in the proposal of the European Commission “Delivering a new deal for energy consumers” and the energy market design consultation.

Electrolux

The second quarter 2015 reported good results for Electrolux business, especially for Major Appliances EMEA. But also for the other areas, that gave together a big contribution to the group’s growth. «During the second quarter 2015 – said Keith McLoughlin, president and ceo of the company – Electrolux achieved an organic growth of 7%, to which all six business areas contributed positively. The financial performance in the Group’s largest business area, Major Appliances EMEA, continued to strengthen year-over-year. Operating income in North America improved significantly compared to the first quarter of the year. Earnings in Major Appliances Asia/Pacific and Professional Products also increased. The Group’s operating income amounted to 921 million Sek for the second quarter 2015, with a seasonally strong cash generation of 3.1 billion Sek.» Market demand in Western Europe continued to strengthen in the second quarter and increased by 4%. In Eastern Europe, demand fell by 23%, as a result of the sharp downturn in Russia and Ukraine. The total European market for appliances is expected to grow by 1–2% in 2015, although the development in Eastern Europe is difficult to assess. For what concerns the GE appliances acquisition McLoughlin specified: «In early July, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that it will seek to stop Electrolux proposed acquisition of GE Appliances, which was announced in September last year. Electrolux does not agree with the DOJ’s assessment that the acquisition will harm competition and will vigorously contest this effort by the DOJ to oppose the transaction. The review of the proposed acquisition will now continue in a court procedure.»
