LG Tiiun

To make growing plants at home easy, LG introduced the LG tiiun in 2021 and the tiiun mini in 2022 – two innovations that allow users to enjoy a greener lifestyle, indoors. A smart gardening system with built-in LED lighting and automatic temperature control, LG tiiun is the ‘green thumb’ that can help anyone achieve gardening success.

LG tiiun was devised and developed by Sprout Company, the first company-in-company (CIC) established by LG. Forming independent in-house companies, such as Sprout, has helped LG to foster innovative new business ideas and enter new markets more efficiently. Case in point, the tiiun mini was developed and launched much faster than its predecessor
Shin Sang-youn, head of Sprout Company, set three clear goals to grow the ‘pet plant’ market and the popularity of LG tiiun. “Our objectives were to turn customers previously uninterested in gardening into plant-lovers, influence customers with an interest in keeping plants to choose LG tiiun and create a fandom among LG tiiun owners,” he said.

The first step in achieving these goals was the creation of an online community for tiiun owners. Established in October 2021, the community now has more than 6,000 active users as of May 2023. “The community has been favorably received because, instead of being a one-sided platform where LG simply posts tiiun-related information and news, it gives members the opportunity to share their own personal stories and communicate with fellow plant- and tiiun-lovers,” explained Shin.As of now, LG tiiun is only available in South Korea. However, it is expected to reach more markets in the near future. “With global expansion in mind, we are currently experimenting with cultivating plants from various regions and environments,” said Shin.

Proud of tiiun’s success at home and looking forward to its bright global future, Shin stated, “In the same way that Scotch Tape and Styler have become generic terms, our hope is that, someday, tiiun will be the word that people use when they’re talking about indoor gardening appliances.

Miele subsidiary Agrilution ends business with automated greenhouses

Daily freshly harvested salads and herbs from an automatically controlled greenhouse (‘Plantcube’) – with this concept, the Munich-based start-up Agrilution wanted to bring the idea of vertical farming into the home. Since the end of 2019, this has been happening under the umbrella of the Miele Group. Now, the Gütersloh-based household appliance company has announced that it will no longer be continuing the business with the Plantcubes due to a lack of economic prospects. This affects almost 40 salaried as well as additional student employees, who have been given notice of termination due to the closure of the business on June 30, 2023. The approximately 650 users, who also purchased their seeds (‘Seedbars’) through Agrilution, will soon receive an offer to buy back their equipment.

Experts understand ‘vertical farming’ as the space-saving supply of fresh food via large, multi-storey greenhouses. Agrilution itself was founded in 2013, but then had to file for insolvency proceedings in 2019 after a financing round could not be realised as planned. After the opening of insolvency proceedings, Miele took over the brand, the know-how and almost all employees in a so-called asset deal and transferred them to the newly founded 100% subsidiary Agrilution Systems GmbH.

Over the past few years, with intensive financial and technical support from Miele, work has been done to guide the business model, product portfolio and workforce into a sustainable marketable future. ‘Unfortunately, however, it has since become apparent that demand has fallen far short of expectations,’ says Gernot Trettenbrein, Senior Vice President New Growth Factory, amongst others responsible for new business areas at Miele. In addition, this product was marketed at over 3,000 euros due to its technical complexity.

In order to make the Plantcube attractive to broader target groups, an additional series was to be launched at a significantly lower entry price. However, this could no longer be realised due to the skyrocketing costs of materials, energy and logistics. As a result, after careful consideration of all available options, the decision was made not to pursue the plantcube business any further. In conjunction with this, Agrilution’s business operations will cease on June 30, 2023. Miele would like to thank the Agrilution team for their dedicated service and wishes all employees the success they deserve in their future careers.

The dealers who marketed Agrilution’s Plantcube as resellers have already been informed separately by Agrilution, as have all end customers and other users. Furthermore, the company has announced that it will buy back all Plantcubes that are in use or still in stock. Detailed offers will follow within the next few weeks

LG is bringing gardening indoors by unveiling a plant growing appliance

LG is bringing gardening indoors by unveiling a plant growing appliance, which allows consumers to grow flowers, vegetables and herbs at home.

The South Korean home appliance giant said on Thursday Tiiun, the indoor plant cultivator, automates most of the plant cultivation process so that even beginners can easily grow plants.

By simply installing a seed kit in the inner shelf of the device and supplying water and nutrients, LG said users can grow their own plants in four to eight weeks, depending on the plant type.

The name of the device is Korean, meaning “sprouted,” according to the company.

The plant cultivator has two shelves and three kinds of seed kits for each shelf, which means that consumers can grow up to six plants at a time.

Regardless of the season, vegetables can be harvested in about four weeks, herbs in about six weeks and flowers bloom after around eight weeks, LG said.

The device is priced at 1.49 million won ($1,256) and LG will sell 20 kinds of seed kits, including three kinds of flowers, 12 vegetables and five herbs, through its mobile app or at LG Best Shop retail stores.

The development of Tiiun is the first project led by LG’s in-house company, Sprout Co., launched to lead new growth businesses.

According to the Korea Invention Promotion Association, the domestic plant cultivation device market is expected to grow to 500 billion won by 2023 from 10 billion won in 2019.

LG’s indoor gardening appliance enables even the most novice of gardeners to experience the joys of having a green thumb. Designed for the millions of consumers worldwide who seek the peace of mind in knowing exactly what’s in their food and where it comes from, the innovative indoor gardening appliance cultivates crisp, fresh herbs and vegetables all year-round; perfect for urban dwellers or anyone interested in pursuing a healthier, greener lifestyle.

Utilizing flexible modules, the appliance replicates optimal outdoor conditions by precisely matching the temperature inside the insulated cabinet with the time of day. LED lights, forced air circulation, and wick-based water management allow seeds to transform quickly into ingredients for delicious recipes and dishes. The advanced gardening system is capable of holding up to 24 all-in-one seed packages1, enough for a family of four to enjoy the health benefits and culinary advantages of cooking with home-grown produce.

LG’s leadership and know-how in appliance technologies are apparent in the indoor gardening cultivator. A key component of the automated gardening solution is LG’s non-circulating water supply technology, which evenly distributes the exact amount of water that the plant packages require. This core technology prevents algae growth and prevents unpleasant odors for a hygienic environment where natural herbs and leafy vegetables can grow. A companion smartphone app helps users manage and monitor their plants, offering useful guidance at each step along the way to ensure a successful harvest every time. In addition to the seeds of your choice, the all-in-one seed packages contain peat moss and fertilizer, making it easy for immediate planting. Initial packages will include 20 different varieties including romaine and other types of lettuce, arugula, chicory, and basil.

LG’s first home gardening cultivator will be on display during CES 2020 from January 7-10 at booth #11100 in Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Follow all of LG’s CES activities and announcements on social media using #LGCES2020.
