LG unveils vision for ThinQ smart home platform

LG Electronics said Monday it presented a blueprint for ThinQ, a platform brand that connects home appliances and consumer electronics with smart technology for higher efficiency, at the Connectivity Standards Alliance member meeting in Seoul.

Jung Ki-hyun, vice president of LG’s platform business center, attended the four-day event as a keynote speaker and shared the company’s vision for providing more consumer-friendly smart home services.

He outlined three core values of ThinQ: advancement, connectivity and openness.

“LG ThinQ will soon serve as a partner that enhances the lives of our consumers by creating a smart environment — whether that’s at work, home and on vacation — that is tailored to their lifestyles,” Jung said.

ThinQ users can enjoy heightened connectivity for LG home appliances by connecting ThinQ to the Internet of Things and other smart devices that enabled Matter, an Internet Protocol-based communications standard for smart home technologies.

In line with the global trend toward artificial intelligence-based service releases, LG looks to equip AI chatbot services and AI-based voice recognition technology to ThinQ.

It also hopes to propel ThinQ’s open innovation strategy by taking full advantage of the wide range of opportunities offered by AI. This includes providing support for virtual assistant software platforms such as Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, which are gaining popularity across diverse consumer demographics.

“We are paving the way for the age of ambient computing. We will continue developing our AI technology and Internet of Things connectivity so our consumers can get the best smart home experience with ThinQ,” Jung said.

The CSA is an organization that drives collaboration in IoT by developing universal open standards that enable the connectivity and interaction of objects. It also specializes in the standardization of a protocol called Matter.

Alongside LG Electronics, this year’s event was attended by 134 members around the globe, including Apple, Amazon and Google.

LG’s ‘uplifting’ home appliances tailored to different lifestyles

LG ThinQ UP home appliances can adapt to the changing lifestyles of its customers thanks to its sleek upgradable features. The range includes refrigerators, washers, dryers, oven ranges, and dishwashers with new functions that can adapt to users’ needs without them having to make any additional purchases.

Built around the customer-centric concept ‘Evolving with You’, the LG ThinQ UP appliances were first launched in South Korea and have since seen international success. The company will continuously develop easy-to-install software updates and hardware add-ons, delivering specialised options and new conveniences based on the usage patterns and suggestions of ThinQ UP appliance owners.

One of the custom features available to download this year is the Laundry Saver Mode which can be applied to dryer models with ThinQ UP. Extremely useful for those times when you can’t unload the dryer right away, Laundry Saver keeps the drum tumbling after the cycle has finished – and until the dryer door is opened – to help prevent wrinkles and odours. Another feature on offer is Improved Nighttime Brightness Control for refrigerators with ThinQ UP, which makes the fridges’ interior lighting softer at nighttime so as not to ‘blind’ users when they open the door

All new software features are optional, and can be easily downloaded from the LG ThinQ app.
“A new paradigm in the home appliance industry, LG ThinQ UP is an innovative, new solution that delivers unprecedented customer value and differentiated user experiences,” said Lyu Jae-cheol, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “We will continue to offer sophisticated lifestyle solutions that provide personalised performance, convenient features and customisable upgradability.”

New version of its home appliance management app “LG ThinQ.”

LG Electronics has released a new version of its home appliance management app “LG ThinQ.” The app allows users to manage 28 types of home appliances including TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners and washing machines.

The new version features a setting function that allows a user to activate multiple appliances at the same time according to pre-set conditions. For example, if air quality in a house is bad, the app puts an air purifier and an air conditioner into air clean mode at the same time.

Another advantage is that a chatbot service based on artificial intelligence provides product information and helps users shoot troubles and file repair requests. A subscription service function, which automatically purchases necessary parts or consumables at regular intervals, has also been introduced.

The user experience (UX) of the app has also been dramatically enhanced to enable people to intuitively use it.

LG to unveil ThinQ home appliances with Amazon Dash Replenishment

LG has announced that it will launch ThinQ home appliances at IFA 2019 which will come with Amazon Dash Replenishment directly integrated. The firm plans to bring Dash Replenishment to its dishwashers, refrigerators, and air purifiers. With Dash, users can order frequently needed items at the touch of a button from Amazon.

The service will initially come to dishwashers but will come to other appliances later on. These products will be launched in several European countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK from this autumn. The launch follows the successful roll out of Dash on LG appliances earlier this year in the United States.
Commenting on the news, Song Dae-hyun, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company, said:

“We are thrilled to present our ThinQ lineup with Amazon Dash Replenishment for the European market at IFA 2019. Combining our industry-leading products with value-added services continues to be a strategic priority in order to create a smart home that allows customers to spend less time on chores and more time on what they enjoy.”

LG will be showing off its ThinQ products with integrated Amazon Dash Replenishment at IFA 2019. The event runs from September 6 – 11 and LG’s booth can be found in Hall 18 of Messe Berlin.
