Portuguese appliance maker Flama S.A. has secured the prestigious German Design Award Gold 2027 for its Mastergrill EVO portable charcoal grill in the Excellent Product Design – Gardening and Outdoor Living category.
The award, conferred by the German Design Council, recognises outstanding industrial design that balances innovation, functionality and aesthetics. Flama highlighted the distinction as validation of its ongoing commitment to products that combine contemporary styling with strong everyday performance.
Redefining Portable Charcoal Grilling
The Mastergrill EVO is designed for modern outdoor living. Key features include:
– Fast ignition (ready in approximately four minutes)
– Precise temperature control via an integrated, adjustable fan powered by AA batteries or USB-C
– Low-smoke cooking
– High portability in a compact format (roughly 37 × 38.6 × 22 cm)
A patent-pending cast-aluminium plate distributes heat evenly, lowers charcoal consumption and reduces flare-ups by separating grease from the heat source. The cooking surface offers about 1,100 cm² of area—suitable for up to six people—and uses a PFAS-free ceramic non-stick coating that is dishwasher-safe. An integrated wind protector, removable stainless-steel waste tray, spatula, transport bag and starter charcoal kit complete the package.
Available in nature-inspired colours including Anthracite, Sand, Terracotta and Forest, the grill is manufactured in Portugal and aims to deliver authentic barbecue flavour with greater convenience and cleanliness than traditional charcoal setups.
Designer João Martins led the project. Flama, founded in 1979 and based in Oliveira de Azeméis in northern Portugal, specialises in small domestic appliances and ranks among the leading Portuguese players in the sector.
In a statement accompanying the announcement, the company said the Mastergrill EVO demonstrates the strength of Portuguese industry and design on the global stage and thanked its team, partners and customers for their support on the path of continuous innovation.
The German Design Award Gold recognition places the Mastergrill EVO among the standout products in its category for 2027, underscoring how thoughtful engineering and design can elevate even classic outdoor cooking experiences.
