iRobot has unveiled the Roomba Duo, the first dual-unit robot vacuum cleaner and floor mop. The new system tackles a long-standing trade-off in the category: traditional wet-and-dry vacuums deliver strong cleaning performance but lack autonomous navigation, while conventional robot vacuums offer hands-free convenience yet fall short on deep-cleaning power.

Roomba Duo solves this by pairing a primary robot that vacuums and steam-mops with an ultra-compact secondary robot. The two units share a single home map and an autonomous mobile charging base, operating together as one coordinated intelligent system.

What sets the Roomba Duo apart is a capability no other consumer robot vacuum currently offers: the primary robot can carry and deploy a second unit. A mechanical arm mounted on top of the main robot keeps its end horizontal while moving, maintaining the stability needed to support the extra weight. When required, it safely lowers and releases the secondary robot into the tightest spaces the larger unit cannot reach.

Both robots connect through the Roomba Home App and coordinate in real time using artificial intelligence on a shared map. The primary unit handles vacuuming and mopping of open floor areas, while the compact secondary robot cleans under furniture, in narrow gaps, and other hard-to-reach spots that standard robot vacuums typically miss.

By dividing the workload between two specialized robots, the system increases coverage in a single cleaning session and brings a new level of coordinated intelligence to home floor care.
