The ozone layer protects the Earth from the harmful components of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, helping to sustain life on our planet. In the 1980s, it was observed that the ozone layer has been damaged in some parts. Thanks in part to the elimination of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in manufacturing, the ozone layer has recovered somewhat in recent decades. In 1993, exactly 30 years ago, BSH was one of the first home appliance manufacturers to launch the first CFC-free cooling appliances in Europe. Consider that a ban on products containing CFCs in the EU came into force in 2000.
In 2015, BSH was the first home appliance manufacturer that opted to use propane in heat pump dryers. The combination of the heat pump technology with the eco-friendly refrigerant propane makes these appliances especially beneficial for the environment and is recommended by the German Federal Environment Agency: “If you decide to buy an appliance that uses heat pump technology, choose one with a halogen-free refrigerant (usually propane).”good news is, that all home appliances manufactured by BSH only contain blowing agents, insulating foams, and refrigerants free of halogenated gases. “We use environmentally-friendly gases that have been technically proven for many years, e.g. hydrocarbons cyclopentane, isobutane and propane”, says Volker Korten. “As we want to make a contribution to climate protection, our refrigerants have no ozone depletion potential and only a very low global warming potential. Now, in 2023 BSH presented particularly energy-saving appliances like the Bosch Green Collection Fridge. This fridge-freezer combination is made from more sustainable, bio-based, and CO2-reduced materials. As a result, the carbon footprint resulting from the material is 33 percent or 100 kg lower than the comparable model. BSH is thus now enabling consumers to specifically reduce CO2 emissions already at the time of product purchase. For people with a high proportion of green electricity, for example, through their own solar power system, this is an additional opportunity for more climate protection
